Once thought of
as common to only those who experienced war, now we know that post traumatic
stress disorder can be found in people who have experienced any major
shock, such as childhood abuse, violence at home, natural disasters, and
9/11, to name just a few.
Some of the common
physical and emotional reactions to trauma are as follows:
- fear and/or anxiety
- grief, disorientation,
denial
- hyper-alertness
- irritability, resentment,
restlessness
- emotional swings
- worry
- nightmares
- flashbacks
- feelings of helplessness,
panic
- feelings of detachment
- emotional numbing
- memory lapses or
difficulty concentrating
- low energy
- sudden sweating
or heart palpitations
- changes in sleep
patterns
- easily startled
Hypnotherapy utilizes
guided imagery, which has been proven to be effective at diminishing the
effects of PTSD. Guided Imagery works with the right side of the brain,
the side that deals with memories, emotions, feelings, and imagination.
Using this technique can deprogram the body's hyper-alert reactions and
re-train the brain to respond to stimuli in a relaxed and positive manner. |
